Looks like Police frontman Sting will be joining the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Ozzy Osbourne in Guitar Hero: World Tour as an in-game avatar. Tool was also unveiled as a band that will contribute their songs, but not their likeness, to the game. The four newly announced songs are:

  • “Parabola” — Tool
  • “Schism” — Tool
  • “Vicarious” — Tool
  • “Demolition Man” — The Police

GH: World Tour will also feature a new “venue designed in collaboration with Tool and highlighting the art style that has become a staple in their music videos, live shows and album artwork.” Excited? Is Sting past his prime? Would you rather have a Maynard James Keenan avatar?

Developer Treyarch has been hard at work getting ready to churn out the next Call of Duty game, and though this new title is quite a contrast to last year’s CoD4 — which took the series to modern times — diehard fans of series can appreciate the return-to-roots WWII setting. Answering the call to arms in CoD5 Call of Duty: World at War is only a stone throw away as the game will hit retailers this November 11 for the PlayStation 3 and alongside other platforms.

What’s better than a master recording for your favorite rhythm game? How about a re-recording? The three songs from Guitar Hero: World Tour have been rerecorded by the original artists, and they are:

  • “Overkill” — Motorhead
  • “Pretty Vacant” — The Sex Pistols
  • “Kick Out the Jams” — MC5

The Sex Pistols rerecorded Pretty Vacant using the original analog sound board from 1969 while Kicking Out the Jams was rerecorded with Wayne Kramer, Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains and Gilby Clark formerly of Guns ‘N’ Roses, but will retain the original 1968 vocals by Rob Tyner.

On the other side of the world, during a New Zealand press event, Activision Blizzard gave Aussies a release date for Guitar Hero: World Tour: November 12th for A$329.95. A bundle that includes only the guitar and the game will be A$169.95 while the game by itself will be A$89.95. Four songs were also unveiled:

  • “Prisoner of Society” by The Living End
  • “Scream Aim Fire” by Bullet for My Valentine
  • “Our Truth” by Lacuna Coil
  • “La Bamba” by Los Lobosz

Smashing Pumpkins fans will probably have an urge to smash some poor defenseless squash in delight upon hearing this news bite. Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan will appear as an in-game character on Guitar Hero: World Tour (due out this fall). He’ll be bringing us back to the tunes of the early 90s with the SP hit song “Today.”

In addition to the on-disc content, a Smashing Pumpkins DLC pack has already been set. Included in the DLC will be a brand new single called G.L.O.W. which will debut “exclusively in the game.” Other older tracks come from differing Pumpkins eras, such as “The Everlasting Gaze” of early 2000 and “1979″ of the late 90s. The three-song track pack will be available sometime after the game launches.

Another Guitar Hero III track pack is ready to be released this week. the Dragonforce track pack will include three tracks from the English speed metal band, including “Heroes Of Our Time,” the debut single from their upcoming album “Ultra Beatdown.” The other two tracks are “Revolution Deathsquad” and “Operation Ground Pound,” both from their third album “Inhuman Rampage.” The track pack will be released worldwide on August 21st.

Dragonforce fans will no doubt be ecstatic at the idea of not only playing three more of their songs on Guitar Hero III, but also shredding along to “Heroes Of Our Time” before the album is even released. For non-Dragonforce fans, this is probably only a worthwhile purchase if you’re in need of a hardcore Guitar Hero III challenge. We just hope they’re a bit easier than “Through The Fire And The Flames.”

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gaming_news/Guitar_Hero_Rock_Band_Instrument_Compatibility_Matrix_v3_0′; With SCEA bringing word of cross-peripheral compatibility for PS3 rhythm games yesterday, consumers looking for that “one music set to rule them all” seems to be a reality drawing closer. However, making sense of the fickle plastic instruments jungle is still quite a daunting task and knowing where each individual peripheral fits into the mass is still a convoluted process. Making life easier on all of you, Joystiq have provided a simple to read chart which clearly illustrates compatible peripherals across all platforms — behold the Instrument Compatibility Matrix, version 3.0. Color-coded and accompanied by lots of visuals, hunting for that perfect set to fit your needs couldn’t be more convenient.
